Convert vector-based or Smart Object layers to pixel-based layers using Layer menu options.
Rasterizing layers gives you access to painting tools and filters that require pixel-based data. The process converts the vector or Smart Object data into a flat, pixel-based image at your current document resolution. When your document contains vector-based content such as type layers, shape layers, or Smart Objects, you'll need to rasterize them before you can paint directly on the layer or apply certain filters.
Once rasterized, you can't edit the vector properties or Smart Object source. The layer becomes permanently pixel based. Duplicate your layer before rasterizing for non-destructive editing. Learn more about preserving flexibility in Smart Objects overview and benefits.
Rasterize selected layers
Select Layer > Rasterize, and then choose an option from the submenu.
The Rasterize submenu offers the following options:
- Type: Rasterizes the text on a type layer without affecting other vector elements on the same layer.
- Shape: Rasterizes a shape layer, converting vector paths to pixels.
- Fill Content: Rasterizes the fill of a shape layer while preserving the vector mask.
- Vector Mask: Rasterizes a vector mask to a layer mask, turning vector paths into pixel-based mask data.
- Smart Object: Rasterizes a Smart Object to a standard raster layer, permanently applying any transformations or Smart Filters.
- Video: Rasterizes the current video frame to a static image layer.
- Layer: Rasterizes all vector and generated data on the selected layers.
- All Layers: Rasterizes every layer in the document that contains vector or generated content.
Tip
To rasterize linked layers, select a linked layer, choose Layer > Select Linked Layers, and then rasterize the selection.
