Find and replace text

Last updated on Oct 10, 2026

Learn how to use search filters to locate specific text strings and update them across one or multiple type layers in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Search for specific text within type layers and replace it with new content. Do this when you need to update repeated terms, correct terminology, or make batch text changes across a document. Confirm if the text layer is editable before you begin to find and replace text.

Search and replace text

Select the layer containing the text you want to find and replace.

Place the insertion point at the beginning of the text you want to search.

Select Edit > Find And Replace Text.

In the Find What field, enter the text you want to find.

In the Change To field, enter the text you want to replace.

Select the required search option.

  • Search All Layers: Searches for the entire document when a non-type layer is selected
  • Forward: Searches from the current insertion point
  • Case Sensitive: Matches exact capitalization
  • Whole Word Only: Excludes partial matches within larger words.
Note

The Find And Replace Text command processes only visible type layers.

Select Find Next to locate the first instance.

Select Change to replace the current instance and remain on it, Change/Find to replace and advance to the next instance or Change All to replace every occurrence in the search scope.

After completing your replacements, review the affected type layers to verify the changes appear as intended in your layout.
