Setting
Review settings for applying texture patterns and combining brush tips in the Brush Settings panel.
Consult this reference when customizing brush texture effects or combining two brush tips to create complex stroke patterns. These settings in the Brush Settings panel control how patterns interact with your brushstrokes and how dual tips blend together.
Texture settings
Texture settings apply a pattern to brush strokes, creating the appearance of painting on textured canvas or other surfaces. Access these options in the Texture section of the Brush Settings panel.
Description |
Pattern sample |
Select a pattern from the popup panel to use as the texture base. |
Invert |
Reverses high and low points in the texture. When selected, lightest pattern areas become low points that receive the least paint; darkest areas become high points that receive the most paint. When deselected, lightest areas receive the most paint. |
Scale |
Controls the pattern size as a percentage of the original. Enter a value or use the slider (range: 1-1000%). |
Texture Each Tip |
Applies texture individually to each brush mark rather than to the entire stroke. Required for Depth variance options to become available. |
Mode |
Specifies the blending mode used to combine brush and pattern. |
Depth |
Controls paint penetration into the texture. Enter a value or use the slider (range: 0-100%). At 100%, low points receive no paint. At 0%, all points receive equal paint, hiding the pattern. |
Minimum Depth |
Sets the minimum depth for paint penetration when Depth Control uses Fade, Pen Pressure, Pen Tilt, or Stylus Wheel. Available only when Texture Each Tip is selected. |
Depth Jitter and Control
Controls depth variation when Texture Each Tip is selected. Enter a Depth Jitter percentage value to specify maximum variation, then choose a Control option:
Control option |
Effect |
Off |
No depth variance control. |
Fade |
Fades from Depth Jitter percentage to Minimum Depth percentage over the specified number of steps. |
Pen Pressure |
Varies depth based on pen pressure. |
Pen Tilt |
Varies depth based on pen tilt angle. |
Stylus Wheel |
Varies depth based on pen thumbwheel position. |
Rotation |
Varies depth based on pen rotation. |
To copy the current texture pattern and scale to all tools that support textures (Brush, Pencil, Clone Stamp, Pattern Stamp, History Brush, Art History Brush, Eraser, Dodge, Burn, and Sponge), select Copy Texture To Other Tools from the Brush Settings panel menu.
Dual Brush settings
Dual Brush combines two brush tips to create marks where both strokes intersect. Set primary tip options in the Brush Tip Shape section, then configure the secondary tip in the Dual Brush section.
Setting |
Description |
Brush tip selection |
Choose a second brush tip from the available presets. |
Mode |
Sets the blending mode for combining primary and dual tip marks. |

Controls dual tip size in pixels. Drag the slider, enter a value, or select Use Sample Size to use the original brush tip diameter. Use Sample Size is available only for brush tips created by sampling image pixels. |
Spacing |
Controls distance between dual tip brush marks in a stroke as a percentage of tip diameter. Enter a value or use the slider. |
Scatter |
Specifies distribution of dual tip marks within the stroke. When Both Axes is selected, marks distribute radially. When deselected, marks distribute perpendicular to the stroke path. Enter a value or use the slider to set maximum scatter percentage. |
Count |
Sets the number of dual tip marks applied at each spacing interval. Enter a value or use the slider. |
