Connect your camera or card reader to transfer photos using direct copying, Adobe Bridge, or Windows Image Acquisition.
Photoshop offers multiple ways to transfer images from your camera to your computer. Your choice depends on your operating system, camera model, and whether you need to organize and rename files during import.
Most digital cameras and card readers connect to your computer via USB and appear as external drives or devices.
Choose your import method
Your camera or card reader determines which import methods are available:
- Direct copying: Transfers files when your device appears as a drive in your file system. Provides the fastest option for simple transfers.
- Adobe Bridge: Organizes, batch-renames, and applies metadata during download. Opens separately from Photoshop.
- Windows Image Acquisition (WIA): Imports directly into Photoshop using the built-in Windows interface. Works with WIA-compatible cameras only.
- Manufacturer software or macOS Image Capture: Imports files using alternative tools provided by your camera manufacturer or operating system.
Import using WIA
In Photoshop, select File > Import > WIA Support.
Select a destination folder to save imported files.
Select Open Acquired Images in Photoshop to edit photos immediately after import. Deselect for large batches.
Select a Unique Subfolder to create a date-named folder for organizing your imported images.
Select Start to launch the import interface.
Choose your camera or card reader from the device list.
Select the images you want to import by clicking thumbnails. Hold Shift while clicking to select multiple consecutive images or select Select All to import everything.
Select Get Picture to transfer the selected images to your destination.

Copy directly from your device
When your camera or card reader appears as a drive in Windows Explorer or macOS Finder, drag and drop image files directly to your computer. This method works for any camera or card but doesn't offer renaming or metadata options.
Use manufacturer software or OS tools
Your camera may include transfer software with device-specific features. Windows users can access WIA through the operating system's Scanner and Camera Wizard. macOS users can use the Image Capture application for device management and file transfer.
Note
TWAIN scanner interfaces aren’t supported in current versions of Photoshop. For scanning documents or photos, use dedicated scanning workflows instead of camera import procedures.
