Learn how to edit linked assets in their source app or embed them when pasting to avoid editing restrictions in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

When you copy and paste content from another Adobe application into Photoshop, the pasted content is linked to Creative Cloud Libraries by default. This library link prevents you from editing the asset directly in Photoshop.

You copy content from another Adobe application and paste it into a Photoshop document. When you try to edit the layer, Photoshop displays the error: "This item isn't directly editable in Photoshop, but it can be placed in a document. To place the item, drag it into an open document."

Smart Object is linked to a Creative Cloud Library

Open the Adobe application where the asset was created.

Select Window > Libraries to open the Libraries panel.

Locate and double-click the asset in the Libraries panel to edit it.

Make your changes and save the asset in the source application.

Return to Photoshop to see the updated asset.

This approach preserves the library link, so changes to the asset are reflected in other documents that use it. For additional guidance, learn how to edit the contents of a Smart Object in Photoshop.

Paste operation links the asset to Creative Cloud Libraries by default

Copy the asset from the source Adobe application.

Select Edit > Paste in Photoshop.

In the Paste dialog, deselect Add To My Current Library.

Select OK to paste the asset as an embedded Smart Object.

Double-click the layer thumbnail to edit the embedded Smart Object in Photoshop.

The embedded Smart Object becomes part of the Photoshop document and does not update other documents that contain the original asset. This approach gives you direct editing control in Photoshop while retaining the non-destructive benefits of Smart Objects.
