Save and open WebP files in Photoshop

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to use native WebP support to save 8-bit RGB documents with lossless or lossy compression for web use in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

WebP format delivers efficient compression for web images, making your files smaller without sacrificing quality. Native WebP support is available in Photoshop 23.2 and later. You can open, edit, and save WebP files without plug-ins or special settings. This format works with 8-bit RGB documents and offers both lossless and lossy compression options. For multiple assets or additional format options, export artboards, layers, and more.

Open a WebP file

Opening a WebP file works the same way as opening any supported image format in Photoshop.

Select File > Open.

Navigate to your WebP file, select it, and select Open.

You can also drag a WebP file directly into Photoshop or double-click it if Photoshop is set as the default application.

Save a document as WebP

Select File > Save a Copy.

Enter a filename and select a save location.

Select WebP from the Format dropdown and select Save.

Note

WebP is also available under File > Save As when there's no risk of overwriting your original document or losing layer data.

In the WebP Options dialog box, choose Lossless for perfect quality or Lossy to reduce file size.

If you selected Lossy, adjust the Quality slider to balance image quality and file size.

Select options to include XMP metadata, EXIF metadata, or Photoshop Extras as needed.

Select OK to save your WebP file.

The quality slider determines compression strength when using lossy compression. Higher quality values produce larger files but preserve more detail. Lossless compression maintains perfect image fidelity regardless of the quality setting.

Including Photoshop Extras embeds additional data that preserves editing capabilities if you reopen the file in Photoshop later.
