Errors using Adobe Photoshop scripts

Learn how to resolve script errors caused by drive-naming conflicts and duplicate volumes in Adobe Photoshop.

When you run automation scripts in Adobe Photoshop or Bridge—such as Merge to HDR Pro or Image Processor—these scripts need to locate specific files and folders on your system to function properly. Drive naming conflicts with operating system folders can prevent scripts from finding the resources they need.

After selecting File > Automate > Merge to HDR Pro or Tools > Photoshop > Image Processor, an error message appears. Common error messages include "Merge to HDR.jsx could not be found," "JavaScript code was missing," or "Please specify a destination folder." The script fails to execute, and no processing occurs.

The following solutions address the most common causes of script execution failures, starting with the most likely cause:

Your primary hard disk name conflicts with a system folder

Open Finder on macOS and select your startup disk.

Select File > Get Info.

Change the disk name in the Name & Extension field to avoid conflicts with system folders.

Restart Photoshop and test the script again.

If renaming your primary disk doesn't resolve the issue, check connected network drives:

The network drive name conflicts with the operating system folder structure

Open network locations or mapped drives.

Identify drives named Applications, System, Library, or Users.

Rename the drive if permitted, or disconnect it temporarily.

Restart Photoshop and run the script.

Reconnect the drive after completing your work if needed.

Another common cause involves duplicate volume names on your system:

Multiple drives share the same name

Open Finder (macOS) or File Explorer (Windows).

Check all mounted volumes, including external drives and network shares.

Identify drives with identical names.

Rename duplicate drives to ensure each volume name is unique.

Restart Photoshop and test the script.

If the previous solutions don't resolve the error, network drives may be interfering even without naming conflicts:

Network drive connections cause path resolution conflicts

Disconnect all network drives from your system.

Eject network volumes in Finder (macOS) or select Disconnect for network drives in Windows.

Restart Photoshop.

Run the script to confirm it works.

Reconnect network drives only when needed.

These script errors don't indicate problems with the scripts themselves, but rather how Photoshop navigates your file system to locate required resources.
