Adjust lighting in images

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Apply AI-powered brightness enhancements with a single click through quick actions.

Learn how to brighten underexposed photos or enhance overall image luminosity without manually adjusting curves, levels, or exposure settings. The Adjust lighting quick action analyzes your image and applies brightness and contrast improvements. Use this for general lighting corrections on photographs with underexposed areas or flat lighting. For selective adjustments to specific regions or advanced control over tonal ranges, use layer-based adjustment tools like Curves or Levels instead. This quick action requires Photoshop version 23.0.1 or later.

Apply the lighting adjustment

Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.

Select the search icon in the upper-right corner of the workspace, or press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) + F.

In the Discover panel, select Browse > Quick Actions.

Scroll to locate Adjust lighting, then select it.

Select Apply to enhance the lighting in your image. Photoshop creates a new adjustment layer with the lighting enhancements. You can modify the effect's intensity by adjusting the layer's opacity in the Layers panel, or use blending modes to refine how the adjustment interacts with your original image.

Modify or remove the adjustment

To apply the same lighting adjustment to a different layer in your document, select the target layer in the Layers panel.

In the Discover panel, select Refresh to apply the adjustment to the newly selected layer.

To remove the adjustment completely, select Revert in the Discover panel. This deletes the adjustment layer, returning your image to its original state.

Tip
