Play actions in the Actions panel

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how to use the Play button, keyboard shortcuts, or Button mode to execute recorded commands and control playback speed in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Playing an action executes the commands recorded on your active document. If the action requires a selection, select the objects before playing. Otherwise, the action applies to the entire document.

Actions can be applied to an entire file or to specific selections, depending on how the action was recorded. Some actions require you to select before playing, while others work on the entire document. You can control playback by executing entire actions, starting from a specific command, or running individual commands.

Play an entire action

If the action requires a selection, select the objects on which to play the action. Otherwise, ensure your document is open and active.

In the Actions panel, select the action name you want to play.

Select the Play button at the bottom of the Actions panel or choose Play from the panel menu. The action executes from your selected command to the end.

If you assigned a keyboard shortcut to an action during recording, press that key combination to play the action automatically without opening the Actions panel.

In Button mode, select a button to execute the entire action. Commands previously excluded from the action will not execute.

Play part of an action

In the Actions panel, expand the action to view its commands.

Select the command from which you want to start playing.

Select the Play button at the bottom of the Actions panel or choose Play from the panel menu.

The action will execute from your selected command through to the end of the action.

Play a single command

In the Actions panel, expand the action to view its commands.

Select the specific command you want to execute.

Press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and select the Play button at the bottom of the Actions panel.

Alternatively, press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS) and select the command name twice.

Adjust playback speed

Choose Playback Options from the Actions panel menu.

Select a speed option and specify any additional settings.

Select OK to apply the playback settings.

Here are the playback speed options:

  • Accelerated: Plays the action at normal speed. Files may be opened, modified, saved, and closed without appearing on-screen. To see files during playback, use Step By Step.
  • Step By Step: Completes each command and redraws the image before executing the next command.
  • Pause For [seconds]: Specifies the time Photoshop pauses between commands.

To undo an action, take a snapshot in the History panel before playing the action. If you need to undo the results, select the snapshot in the History panel to restore your document to its previous state.
