Set up HDR display support in Photoshop

Learn how to configure OS display settings and enable the Technology Previews preference to view HDR content on compatible displays.
HDR display support enhances your editing experience with greater brightness and contrast and lets you view photos with enhanced highlights and shadow detail.
Setup steps vary by operating system and display type. On macOS, HDR display is enabled by default in Photoshop but requires specific OS display settings. On Windows, both the OS settings and Photoshop preference must be configured manually. You must have Windows 11 or later to use this feature.
Before configuring HDR display support, verify that your system meets the requirements.
- Compatible display (macOS): MacBook Pro 14" or 16" with XDR display (November 2021 or later) or Apple Pro Display XDR
- Compatible display (Windows): VESA Certified DisplayHDR level 1000 or higher
- Operating system (Windows): Windows 11 or later
- Graphics processor (GPU): Enabled in Photoshop preferences
Configure HDR on macOS with Apple HDR display
Select the Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) preset.
Select Photoshop > Settings > Technology Previews.
Select the Precise color management for HDR Display checkbox to enable the feature.
This preset optimizes display brightness and color gamut for HDR content
Configure HDR on macOS with non-Apple HDR display
Select System Settings > Display on your Mac.
Toggle ON the High Dynamic Range option.
Select Photoshop > Settings > Technology Previews.
Select the Precise color management for HDR Display checkbox to enable the feature.
Non-Apple HDR displays require manual activation in macOS system settings. Once enabled, Photoshop can display HDR content with precise color management.
Configure HDR on Windows 11 with HDR display
Confirm you are running Windows 11 by selecting Start > Settings > System > About.
Select System > Display > HDR > Display Capabilities to verify your display supports HDR.
Select System > Display > HDR, and then toggle ON the Use HDR option.
Select Edit > Preferences > Technology Previews.
Select the Precise color management for HDR Display checkbox to enable the feature.
Note
Photoshop HDR display support is only available on Windows 11. Earlier Windows versions do not support this feature.
After completing these configuration steps, Photoshop displays HDR images with accurate color representation and extended dynamic range. Your photos will show enhanced detail in both highlights and shadows when viewed on your calibrated display.
