Use Photoshop images in Adobe Illustrator

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Learn how Adobe Illustrator opens, places, links, embeds, and exports Adobe Photoshop on desktop files while preserving layers, masks, blending modes, and paths.

Photoshop and Illustrator support three workflows: opening PSD files, placing them as embedded or linked artwork, and exporting vector paths. Each workflow offers different editing and file-management options.

When you open or place PSD files, layers, masks, and blending modes are preserved based on the import method. Exported paths create vector outlines for precise alignment or trapping. For specialized techniques that isolate foreground objects with clipping paths, learn how to create transparency with image clipping paths.

Save and close your Photoshop file

In Photoshop, select File > Save to save your document as a PSD file.

Close the file in Photoshop to prevent file-locking conflicts when opening it in Illustrator.

Open a Photoshop file directly in Illustrator

Opening a PSD file in Illustrator creates a new Illustrator document from your Photoshop artwork.

In Illustrator, select File > Open.

Locate the Photoshop file in the dialog box and select Open.

In the Photoshop Import Options dialog box, select Convert Layers to Objects or Flatten Layers to a Single Image.

Select OK.

Note

Convert Layers to Objects does not support Photoshop adjustment layers or layer effects. Select Flatten Layers to a Single Image if preserving exact visual appearance is more important than layer-level editing.

Place a Photoshop file into an existing Illustrator document

Place Photoshop artwork into an existing Illustrator document. You can embed the file to make it part of the Illustrator document or link it to maintain a connection to the original PSD file.

Embed a Photoshop file

Embedding copies the artwork into your Illustrator file.

In Illustrator, select File > Place.

Locate the Photoshop file.

Deselect the Linked checkbox if it is selected.

Select Show Import Options.

Select Place.

In the Photoshop Import Options dialog box, select Convert Layers to Objects or Flatten Layers to a Single Image.

Select OK.

Link a Photoshop file

Linking maintains a connection to the original PSD file. Changes you make in Photoshop automatically update in Illustrator when you save the source file.

In Illustrator, select File > Place.

Locate the Photoshop file.

Select the Linked checkbox.

Select Place.

Select Edit Original to open the linked image in Photoshop and revise it. Any changes you save in Photoshop automatically appear in your Illustrator document.

Note

Illustrator centers the linked image in your document. A red X indicates that the image is linked and not directly editable in Illustrator.

Export Photoshop paths to Illustrator

Exporting paths creates an Illustrator file containing vector outlines from your Photoshop document. Use this workflow to create trapping guides or align Illustrator objects to Photoshop artwork.

Draw and save a path, or convert an existing selection into a path using the Paths panel.

Select File > Export > Paths To Illustrator.

Select a location for the exported path.

Type a filename.

Select Work Path from the Path menu to export the current work path, or select a named path.

Select Save.

Open the exported file in Illustrator to manipulate the path or use it to align Illustrator objects.

Note

The crop marks in the exported Illustrator file reflect the dimensions of your Photoshop image. The path's position within the Photoshop document is maintained if you don't change the crop marks or move the path.
