Manage patterns in the Patterns panel

Learn how to use the Patterns panel to apply, organize, and manage pattern presets across different layer types in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

The Patterns panel gives centralized access to pattern presets, allowing you to apply, organize, and manage pattern libraries in one place.

Use the Patterns panel to work with existing patterns in your library. You can apply patterns to text, pixel, and shape layers using multiple methods. To access the panel, select Window > Patterns.

Apply a pattern to text layers

Select one or more text layers in the Layers panel.

In the Patterns panel, select any pattern to apply it as a layer effect.

Apply a pattern to pixel layers

In the Patterns panel, select a pattern.

Drag a pattern from the Patterns panel onto a pixel layer in the Layers panel.

Apply a pattern to shape layers as a shape fill

Select one or more shape layers in the Layers panel.

In the Patterns panel, select any pattern to apply it as the shape fill.

Apply a pattern as a fill layer

In the Patterns panel, select a pattern.

Press Command (macOS) or Alt (Windows) and drag a pattern from the Patterns panel onto the canvas or onto a layer in the Layers panel.

Pattern fill layers offer the greatest flexibility, as you can adjust the pattern, scale, angle, and blending options at any time without altering the original image.

Organize patterns into groups

Select the Patterns panel menu, then select New Pattern Group.

In the Group Name dialog box, type a group name, and then select OK.

Drag one or more patterns into the group folder. Press and hold Shift to select multiple patterns before dragging.

Show legacy patterns

Select the Patterns panel menu, and then select Legacy Patterns and More.

Restore default patterns

Select the Patterns panel menu, and then select Restore Default Patterns.

Rename a pattern

Select the pattern you want to rename.

Select the Patterns panel menu, then select Rename Pattern.

In the Pattern Name dialog box, type a new name, and then select OK.

Delete a pattern

Select the pattern you want to delete.

Select the Patterns panel menu, then select Delete Pattern.
