Share color swatches between applications

Last updated on Oct 6, 2026

Learn how to use the same solid colors across Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign by saving your swatches in a format all three applications can read.

Sharing swatches helps you maintain consistent brand colors and design elements throughout your Creative Cloud workflow. You can share process and spot-color swatches between applications; however, patterns and gradients can't be shared using this method.

Before sharing swatches, organize your Swatches panel to include only the colors you want to export. Remove any swatches you don't need, as they will be included in the saved library.

Colors appear identical across applications only when your color settings are synchronized.

Create and save swatches for exchange

Select Window > Swatches to open the Swatches panel.

Create the process and spot-color swatches you want to share.

Select Save Swatches For Exchange from the Swatches panel menu.

Choose an easily accessible location, enter a filename, and select Save.

The following swatch types are automatically excluded when saving for exchange: patterns, gradients, the Registration swatch from Illustrator or InDesign, and book color references, HSB, XYZ, duotone, monitorRGB, opacity, total ink, and webRGB swatches from Photoshop.

Load shared swatches in another application

Open Photoshop, Illustrator, or InDesign, and select Window > Swatches.

Select Load Swatches from the Swatches panel menu.

Navigate to the saved swatch library file and select Load.

The shared swatches now appear in your Swatches panel and are ready to use. To maintain color consistency, verify that your color settings are synchronized across all Creative Cloud applications using Edit > Color Settings.
