Work with the Swatches panel

Last updated on Oct 6, 2026

Learn how to apply saved color swatches to layers and organize them into custom groups for efficient color management in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Use the Swatches panel when you need to apply consistent colors across your document or maintain color palettes for specific projects. Unlike the Color panel, which is designed for interactive color mixing, the Swatches panel focuses on storing and applying preset colors. The panel automatically handles different layer types, updates text and shape layers directly, or creates fill layers for pixel content, preserving your original work.

The Swatches panel displays a default color set that you can use immediately or customize by organizing colors into project-specific groups. Select Window > Swatches to open the panel and access color swatches as clickable tiles that can be applied to any layer type.

Apply swatches to text and shape layers

In the Layers panel, select one or more text or shape layers.

In the Swatches panel, select any swatch to apply that color to the selected layers.

You can also drag a swatch directly from the Swatches panel onto a layer's content on the canvas, or onto a layer in the Layers panel. To apply a swatch, drag a swatch from the Swatches panel onto a pixel later in the Layers panel. Photoshop automatically creates a fill layer above the pixel layer, preserving your original image content.

Organize swatches into groups

In the Swatches panel, select the Create New Group icon.

Enter a descriptive name for the group and select OK.

Drag individual swatches into the group or press Shift-click to select multiple swatches before dragging them into the group.

Tip

Create nested groups by selecting an existing group and dragging it into another group. This organizational structure helps you manage color palettes for different projects or design systems.

Show legacy swatches

In the Swatches panel, select the panel menu icon.

Select Legacy Swatches from the menu.

Legacy swatches from previous Photoshop versions appear in the panel, allowing you to maintain consistency with older projects.
