Use rulers in Photoshop

Position elements precisely by displaying rulers, adjusting the zero origin, and changing measurement units.
Rulers help you position images and elements with precision in your workspace. When visible, rulers appear along the top and left edges of the active window with markers that track your pointer position in real time. The ruler origin (the 0,0 mark) determines where measurements begin and set the grid's origin point.
Rulers provide essential visual feedback for layout work, photo editing, and design tasks requiring exact positioning. You can customize both the visibility and measurement system to match your workflow needs.
Show or hide rulers
Select View > Rulers to toggle ruler visibility, and then press Ctrl + R (Windows) or Command + R (macOS) for a quick show or hide rulers.
Change the ruler origin
Moving the ruler origin allows you to measure from a specific point.
Position the pointer over the intersection of the rulers at the beginning of the window.
Drag diagonally down onto the image. A set of crosshairs appears, marking the new origin on the rulers.
Hold Shift while dragging to snap the ruler origin to the ruler tick marks.
Change the measurement unit
Open the Units & Rulers preferences by doing one of the following:
- Select a ruler and then choose Edit > Preferences > Units & Rulers (Windows)
- Select Photoshop > Settings > Units & Rulers (macOS).
Choose your preferred unit of measurement from the Rulers dropdown menu.
Select one of the following options for Point/Pica Size:
- PostScript (72 points/inch) for output to PostScript devices
- Traditional (72.27 points/inch) for traditional print measurements.
Select OK.
You can also quickly change ruler units by right-clicking (Windows) or Control-clicking (macOS) directly on a ruler and selecting a new unit from the context menu. Changing units in the Info panel automatically updates the ruler units. Use Position with the Ruler tool to understand measurement and the Info panel tool options.
