Work with optional extensions

Last updated on Oct 4, 2026

Create a configuration file to control specialized Photoshop behaviors, such as GPU settings and scratch disk management.

Optional extensions modify specialized Photoshop behaviors that aren't available through standard preferences. These settings are useful for troubleshooting graphics issues, optimizing performance on specific hardware, or accessing legacy tool modes.

Ensure you have:

  • Text editor (Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on macOS)
  • Administrator access to your user folder
  • Knowledge of which extension you want to enable

Create the configuration file

Open Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on macOS.

Type the required text for your desired extension on a single line. Example: LogScratch 1.

Add each additional extension on a new line to enable multiple settings.

Select File > Save As.

Name the file PSUserConfig.txt exactly as shown, including capitalization.

Navigate to your Photoshop settings folder:

  • Windows: C:\Usersusername>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop \Adobe Photoshop Settings
  • macOS: /Users//Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop Settings
Note

On macOS, the user Library folder is hidden by default. To access it, select Go > Go to Folder in Finder, type ~/Library/Preferences, and select Go.

Select Save to save the file.

Restart Photoshop for the changes to take effect.
