Learn how to configure mojikumi spacing, kinsoku line breaks, and burasagari punctuation for Japanese text layouts in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Control spacing, line breaks, and punctuation in Japanese text to create professional typography that follows Japanese Industrial Standards. You can adjust mojikumi spacing, kinsoku line breaks, and burasagari punctuation at the paragraph level to fine-tune how your Japanese text appears.

Select a mojikumi spacing set

Mojikumi controls spacing between Japanese characters, roman characters, punctuation, and numbers according to Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) X 4051-1995.

Select the paragraphs you want to adjust in your type layer.

Open the Paragraph or Type Layer Properties panel.

Choose an option from the Mojikumi dropdown menu based on your spacing needs.

  • None: Turns off mojikumi spacing rules
  • Mojikumi Set 1: Uses half-width spacing for punctuation
  • Mojikumi Set 2: Uses full-width spacing for most characters except the last character in a line
  • Mojikumi Set 3: Uses full-width spacing for most characters, including the last character in a line
  • Mojikumi Set 4: Uses full-width spacing for all characters

Configure kinsoku shori line breaks

Kinsoku shori prevents certain characters from appearing at the beginning or end of a line. Choose JIS Weak for basic restrictions that omit long vowel symbols and small hiragana characters, or JIS Maximum for comprehensive restrictions.

Select the paragraphs you want to adjust.

In the Paragraph panel or Type Layer Properties panel, choose an option from the Kinsoku dropdown menu.

  • None: Turns off kinsoku shori line-breaking rules
  • JIS Weak: Prevents a limited set of characters from beginning or ending lines
  • JIS Maximum: Prevents an extensive set of characters from beginning or ending lines

Customize line-breaking behavior

To customize line-breaking behavior, select the Paragraph panel menu, choose Kinsoku Shori Type, and select your preferred method.

Select a line-breaking method:

  • Push In First: Moves characters to the previous line when needed
  • Push Out First: Moves characters to the next line when needed
  • Push Out Only: Always moves characters down to the next line

You must set the Kinsoku dropdown to JIS Weak or JIS Maximum to access line-breaking options. Setting Kinsoku to None turns off both line-breaking controls and burasagari punctuation options.

Set burasagari hanging punctuation

Burasagari allows single-byte and double-byte periods and commas to extend outside the paragraph bounding box for cleaner text alignment.

Select the paragraphs you want to adjust.

Make sure the Kinsoku dropdown is set to JIS Weak or JIS Maximum, not None.

In the Paragraph panel menu, choose Burasagari, or use the Burasagari dropdown in the Type Layer Properties panel.

Select your preferred option:

  • None: Turns off hanging punctuation
  • Regular: Allows punctuation to hang outside the bounding box on lines that naturally extend to the edge
  • Force: Extends all lines ending with qualifying punctuation outside the bounding box by spreading the line

Burasagari options are unavailable when Kinsoku Shori is set to None. You must first enable kinsoku shori to use hanging punctuation.

Access composition settings in both the Paragraph panel and the Type Layer Properties panel. The Type Layer Properties panel groups all Asian text features together for easier access. Changes made in either location affect the same text properties.
