Rotate or flip entire images

Last updated on Oct 6, 2026

Turn or mirror your full canvas at preset or custom angles using Image rotation commands in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.

Image rotation commands reorient every layer in your document at once. Use these commands when you need to correct the overall orientation of an image captured or scanned at the wrong angle. You can rotate a landscape photo to portrait or flip a scanned document that was placed upside down using these commands.

Image rotation permanently modifies pixel data across all layers. Save a copy of your document before rotating if you need to preserve the original orientation. To rotate individual layers, selections, or objects without affecting the entire canvas, use Transform instead.

For non-destructive viewing rotation, select the Rotate View tool. To straighten a crooked horizon line, select Crop and Straighten.

Rotate or flip the canvas

Select Image > Image Rotation.

Choose the rotation or flip option that matches your needs:

  • 180°: Turns the image upside down
  • 90° Clockwise: Rotates clockwise by a quarter turn
  • 90° Counter Clockwise: Rotates counterclockwise by a quarter turn
  • Arbitrary: Rotates the image to a custom angle between -359.99° and 359.99°
  • Flip Canvas Horizontal: Mirrors the image left to right
  • Flip Canvas Vertical: Flips the image top to bottom

If you selected Arbitrary, enter your angle in the dialog box, enter value for Angle, then Clockwise or Counter clockwise.

Select OK.

For layer-level rotation, review the transformation options in Photoshop. To rotate individual layers, selections, or objects, select Edit > Transform or Free Transform.
