Learn how to select specific objects or areas in your image using the Object Selection tool.

Using the Object Selection tool, draw a rectangle or lasso around the area, or let it automatically detect and select the object or region in the image.

Select the Object Selection tool from the toolbar.

Hover over the image to automatically highlight the object or region you want to select.

Object finder is highlighted in the settings menu of the Object Selection tool in the Options bar, above an image of buildings on the Photoshop canvas.
Select Set additional options to disable Object finder from the Option bar to manually define a region using either Rectangle or Lasso tool.

Select a selection mode from the Options bar to modify further:

  • New selection : Create a selection when nothing is currently selected.
  • Add to selection : Include additional areas by hovering over or drawing around them.
  • Subtract from selection : Exclude unwanted areas by hovering over or drawing around them.
  • Intersect with selection : Retain only the overlapping areas of multiple selections.

Refine the selection using additional options from the Options bar:

  • Sample All Layers: Include all visible layers in the selection.
  • Hard Edge: Apply sharp edges to the selection boundary.
