Flatten frames into layers

Last updated on 2 December 2025

Learn how to convert video frames into individual layers in Adobe Photoshop to edit frames separately and apply custom effects.

Before you begin
  • Import your video layer and switch to frame animation mode or video timeline mode.
  • Save your file before proceeding, as this action changes the layer structure.
  • Be aware that audio data from video is discarded when flattening frames.
Tip

Convert videos to Smart Objects before flattening for non-destructive editing.

Open the Timeline panel and select your video layer.

Select the panel menu icon and choose Flatten Frames Into Layers.
Photoshop creates a separate layer for each frame and arranges them in the Layers panel, with the first frame at the base of the stack.
