Create image clipping paths for transparency
Learn how to use vector paths to define visible areas when placing images in page-layout programs in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.
Clipping paths isolate foreground objects by making surrounding areas transparent when you place images in applications like Adobe InDesign or Illustrator. This technique works best for images with defined edges, where you want to exclude the background.
Use clipping paths when your page-layout application doesn't support native Photoshop transparency or when you need precise vector-based edge control. For images with soft edges, shadows, or feathered transitions, native layer transparency typically produces better results; clipping paths preserve only hard edges.
Modern workflows have reduced the need for clipping paths. Adobe InDesign 2.0 and later natively supports PSD files with layer transparency, eliminating the need for clipping paths in most cases. Clipping paths remain essential when working with applications that don't recognize PSD transparency or when printing to systems that require vector-defined transparency.
- Create a work path that defines the visible area of your image or have an existing selection to convert to a path.
- Understand your target application's file format requirements.
- Determine whether you're printing to PostScript or non-PostScript printers.
If you haven't created a path, convert a selection to a path or draw one using the Pen tool to define the visible area.
Designate the clipping path
In the Paths panel, select the work path and choose Save Path from the panel menu.
Enter a descriptive name for the path and select OK.
With the saved path selected, choose Clipping Path from the Paths panel menu.
In the Clipping Path dialog box, verify that your path appears in the Path menu.
Leave the Flatness field blank unless you encounter printing errors, then select OK.
The clipping path is now embedded in your image. When you place this image in a page-layout application, areas outside the path appear transparent.
Adjust flatness for printing issues
Flatness controls how PostScript printers approximate curves; lower values create smoother curves but require more processing power.
Configure flatness settings
Select your clipping path in the Paths panel.
Choose Clipping Path from the panel menu.
In the Flatness field, enter a value appropriate for your output resolution.
Select OK to apply the flatness setting.
For high-resolution printing (1200–2400 dpi), use flatness values between 8 and 10. For low-resolution printing (300–600 dpi), use values between 1 and 3. Higher flatness values simplify curves by using fewer line segments, which can resolve printing errors with complex paths.
The same path may print successfully on a low-resolution device but fail at higher resolutions. High-resolution printers use more line segments to describe curves precisely.
Simplify complex paths
Complex clipping paths with many anchor points can cause printing failures even with appropriate flatness settings. Simplify problematic paths using either method:
Manual simplification: Select the Direct Selection tool and delete unnecessary anchor points from the path, focusing on areas where multiple points describe gentle curves.
Automatic simplification: Load your existing clipping path as a selection by Ctrl-clicking (Windows) or Command-clicking (macOS) the path thumbnail. Choose Make Work Path from the Paths panel menu and increase the tolerance setting to 4–6 pixels. This reduces the number of anchor points while preserving the overall shape. Save the simplified path and designate it as your new clipping path.
After simplifying, test print to verify the path prints correctly while maintaining acceptable edge quality.
Save for your target application
Choose your file format based on your target application and printer type.
Export with the clipping path
If printing with process colors, select Image > Mode > CMYK Color to convert your image.
Choose File > Save As.
For PostScript printers, select Photoshop EPS, DCS, or PDF format from the Format menu.
For non-PostScript printers, select TIFF format and plan to place the file in Adobe InDesign.
Select Save and configure format-specific options in the dialog that appears.
For EPS files on Windows, set Preview to TIFF (8 bits/pixel) and Encoding to ASCII85. For EPS files on macOS, set Preview to Macintosh (8 bits/pixel) and Encoding to ASCII85. For TIFF files, set Image Compression to None.
If your page-layout application displays transparent areas as white on screen but prints them correctly, it may not accurately preview clipping paths. Check your printed output to verify the clipping path works as intended.
